WiMAX is a term or acronym meaning worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX). WiMAX is a standards initiative whose purpose is to ensure that the broadband wireless radios manufactured for customer use interoperate from vendor to vendor. WiMAX is defined as a "last mile" broadband wireless access alternative to land line services and provides fixed, portable or mobile non-line-of sight service from a base station. WiMAX has the capability to provide coverage for a small city delivering high bandwidth to support fixed and mobile access applications. No two cities or countries are exactly alike in terms of the challenges and opportunities presented for connectivity; however, broadband wireless is an effective solution at serving customers. Even in developing countries in Africa, where infrastructure is poor to non-existent, WiMAX is a quick, effective and cost efficient solution.
